Vietnamese litchi to be exported to Australia
(MARD - 01/10/2014) According to the Vietnamese Trade Office in Australia, the Australian Government is completing final procedures for importing Vietnamese litchi.
Australia is one of the countries applying the hardest quarantine regulations in the world. So far, Australia has not accepted to import any fresh fruits from Viet Nam.
To promote fresh litchi fruit exports to the market, in recent years, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development in coordination with the Ministry of Industry and Trade have worked closely with the Australian Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry to remove technical barriers for Vietnamese fresh litchi.
Under the provisions of the Australia, before allowing litchi imports, Vietnam must conduct surveys on litchi cultivation zones and packaging units and working with local management agencies on pest control at plantation gardens and on potential of litchi exports.
Vietnamese litchi is expected to be officially imported into Australia in 2015. Bringing litchi to Australia not only helps diversify markets for litchi but also creates opportunities for other fruits like dragon fruits, longan and mango to be shipped to the Australian market.
